SERVICES INFERTILITY

Infertility in women is characterised by the inability to fall pregnant after about a year of actively trying. If you are older than 35, however, this period is reduced to six months. There can be many factors that affect your fertility, such as menstrual abnormalities, hormonal imbalances and other biological disorders.

In many cases, infertility goes hand in hand with the treatment of conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS), polyps and uterine fibroids. These conditions can affect ovulation, which can, in turn, impact your ability to fall pregnant. If ovulation is disturbed or does not occur, your ovaries won’t release an egg into your fallopian tubes for fertilisation with sperm. In fact, any interruption in this process, such as a blockage in the Fallopian tubes or low sperm count in your partner, can affect your fertility.

Whatever the underlying cause, however, infertility can be diagnosed and treated with the help of an experienced gynaecologist like Dr Victor.

Symptoms of infertility in women include:

  • Inability to fall pregnant within a year of trying
  • Inability to fall pregnant within six months of trying (woman over 35)
  • Absent menstruation
  • Prolonged menstrual cycle (longer than 35 days)
  • Short menstrual cycle (shorter than 21 days)

Treatment Options

If you are experiencing difficulties conceiving, it is important to consult a gynaecologist such as Dr Victor, who is passionate about helping couples fall pregnant.

Depending on your specific needs, hormonal treatment may be used to help improve your fertility. This form of treatment is necessary when infertility is directly related to hormonal imbalances caused by conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. Medical treatment to balance your hormones and promote the necessary conditions for fertilisation to occur is the most common form of fertility treatment.

In other cases, infertility cannot be treated by medications and hormones. In these cases, Dr Victor may advise other forms of treatment, such as assisted reproductive technology (ART). This form of treatment works to help couples conceive by combining the egg and sperm artificially outside the body. In vitro fertilisation (IVF), is the most common form of ART treatment. Unfortunately, however, Dr Victor does not offer IVF at her practice in George.
